Overdose Crisis Data

Accidental overdose is the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States and is also the leading cause of death for adults aged 25-44. Provisional data from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics indicate that the United States experienced an estimated 80,391 drug overdose deaths in 2024, representing a 26.9% decrease from the 110,037 deaths reported in 2023. This marks the lowest annual total since 2019. The data also show a significant decline in opioid-related overdose deaths, falling from approximately 83,140 in 2023 to 54,743 in 2024. In addition, deaths involving cocaine and psychostimulants, such as methamphetamine, also decreased.

For every fatal drug overdose, there are many more nonfatal overdoses. More than 75% of the nearly 107,000 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2021 involved an opioid. Analyzing patterns in both fatal and nonfatal opioid overdoses can help allocate resources, inform response, and prevent future deaths.
