Genesee County Smart Growth Plan
The Genesee County Smart Growth Plan is designed to mitigate potential environmental impacts of the Genesee County Water Supply Project on the viability of agriculture. The Plan encourages the revitalization of villages and hamlet areas while protecting valuable agricultural resources.
Key Goals of the Smart Growth Plan
- Focus County resources on supporting economic development opportunities in the most promising locations.
- Revitalize existing areas, including industrial areas, business districts, and residential neighborhoods in the City of Batavia and developed village areas.
- Protect farmland and the rural character of the countryside, maintaining the viability of agriculture.
Water System Access and Development
To ensure sustainable development, the Plan requires the County to restrict water system hook-ups. Water access is available to existing and new development located within Smart Growth Development Areas (see town maps below), but new development on land enrolled in an Agricultural District may be restricted due to lateral restrictions established during the formation of certain water districts.
New developments outside of the Smart Growth Development Area boundary are not automatically eligible for water system hook-up. However, the County has established an administrative review process for case-by-case evaluations. Businesses and residents seeking water system hook-ups can apply using the form linked below.
