Accidental overdose is the leading cause of injury-related death in the United States. Provisional data from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics indicate that the United States experienced an estimated 69,973 drug overdose deaths in 2025, representing a 14% decrease from the 81,313 deaths estimated in 2024. This marks the lowest annual total since 2019. The data also show a significant decline in opioid-related overdose deaths, falling from approximately 55,296 in 2024 to 44,564 in 2025. More than 60% of the 69,973 drug overdose deaths in the United States in 2025 involved an opioid. In addition, deaths involving cocaine and psychostimulants, such as methamphetamine, also decreased. Local data is showing similar trends with decreases in overdose deaths and decreases in opioid-related overdose deaths. However, based on preliminary 2025 data there was an increase in overdose deaths involving cocaine. So far it is the most common drug involved in overdose deaths locally in 2025.
