Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention

In October 2021, the Genesee County Health Department received $1.2 million from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to support childhood lead poisoning prevention in the GLOW region, which includes Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

The funding supported the creation of the GLOW Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (GLOW CLPPP) and the development of community outreach and educational activities throughout the four-county region.

GLOW CLPPP educates residents about:

  • The dangers of lead-based paint
  • How to identify lead-based paint hazards
  • How lead exposure affects children
  • Ways to reduce a child’s exposure to lead hazards
  • The importance of blood lead testing for children

The program works with community organizations to expand lead-safety education. It also created the GLOW Lead Coalition to share ideas and resources with community partners and advocate for policy changes.
