Mandated Services

History Department and Records Management

The Genesee County History Department supports the preservation, management and use of records with long-term historical value while helping residents, researchers, students and visitors access local history resources.

Government Historian Responsibilities

Arts & Cultural Affairs Law (Sections 57.13-.17) provides for the appointment of government historians and describes their duties. The law states that "each local government historian shall promote the establishment and improvement of programs for the management and preservation of local government records with enduring value for historical or other research ..."

The History Department promotes local history by preparing collection guides, brochures and books and by presenting programs to community organizations.

History Department Services

Genesee County has appointed a historian since 1941, and the History Department's Research Library opened in 1977.

The department assists residents and visitors with:

  • Genealogy research
  • Architectural documentation
  • Local history research
  • Student research and assignments using local records

These services help preserve Genesee County history, support historical research and provide resources for residents, students and visitors.

Records Management Program

In compliance with the Local Government Records Law (Chapter 737, Laws of 1987, Section 1), Genesee County established an administrative structure for its Records Management Program.

The program includes:

  • A local law adopted in 1988
  • A designated Records Management Officer
  • An appointed advisory board
  • Annual reports submitted to the Genesee County Legislature since 1988

The County has continued to develop its records management program with financial assistance from state grants.

Purpose of Records Management

Managing records from creation through final disposition helps Genesee County:

  • Reduce unnecessary paperwork
  • Provide efficient access to requested information
  • Document compliance with state and federal courts and agencies
  • Preserve historically significant government records
