Linda Richter Recognized for Nearly Three Decades of Volunteer Service

Genesee County resident Linda Richter was recently recognized by the New York State Office for the Aging for nearly three decades of dedicated volunteer service to older adults, children and families throughout the community.

Richter was nominated for the statewide recognition by Lisa Wittmeyer of Catholic Charities. Genesee County participated in the statewide nomination process for the first time this year.

A resident of Basom, Richter began volunteering around 1998, before her retirement. She and her husband, Tim, initially assisted with ushering and ticket sales at Lancaster Opera House. They later volunteered with Meals on Wheels, providing companionship and support to older adults throughout Genesee County.

Richter joined Genesee County’s Retired and Senior Volunteer Program in 2001. During nearly 25 years with RSVP, part of the AmeriCorps Seniors program, she has contributed 8,381 hours of service through local partner organizations.

Her volunteer work has included patient care and fundraising at Crossroads House, supporting Catholic Charities’ Home Visitation Program and assisting with Lifespan of Greater Rochester’s Financial Management Program.

Linda and Tim Richter also helped bring Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library to the area by establishing a local chapter, expanding access to books for children and families across nearly every school district in the county.

Richter’s service is defined by her compassion, humility and willingness to help wherever she is needed. Together, Linda and Tim Richter have inspired people locally, regionally and across New York State through their commitment to strengthening the community.

“Don’t retire from something, retire to something,” Richter said. “You’ll get more back from volunteering… you’ve got to do something.”

Genesee County’s RSVP program connects adults age 55 and older with volunteer opportunities that address local needs while providing meaningful opportunities for connection and service.
