The Genesee County Sheriff’s Office and the City of Batavia Police Department will increase patrols as part of a coordinated enforcement effort with the STOP-DWI program to raise awareness about the dangers of impaired driving.

This statewide STOP-DWI enforcement initiative will take place on April 20, 2026. During this campaign, the New York State Police, county sheriff’s offices, and municipal law enforcement agencies will participate in a unified effort to keep roadways safe.

Incidents of drug-impaired driving continue to rise. While certain marijuana laws have changed, it remains illegal—and dangerous—to operate a vehicle while impaired by marijuana or other drugs. Drug impairment significantly reduces a driver’s ability to operate a vehicle safely, making it just as hazardous as driving under the influence of alcohol.

Drivers are reminded to “Have a Plan” before traveling. Impaired driving is completely preventable with simple preparation. Arrange for a designated driver, use a rideshare service, or plan for another safe way home.
