The Genesee County Office for the Aging (OFA) and the Genesee Senior Foundation have been awarded grants from the Muriel H. Marshall Fund for the Aging at Rochester Area Community Foundation to continue vital services and programs for older adults across Genesee County.

The Marshall Fund, established by Roxanne Marshall in honor of her mother, Muriel, reflects Roxanne’s vision of helping older adults remain active, engaged, and independent. The Fund supports programs that provide access to transportation, in-home services, socialization, and volunteer opportunities—all designed to enhance the quality of life for residents 60 and older.

“Thanks to the Marshall Fund, we’re able to connect older adults in our community with meaningful services and opportunities,” said Jill Yasses, Service Administrator for the OFA. “This support allows us to address not only immediate needs, but also help people stay engaged and independent for as long as possible.”

The Genesee County Office for the Aging received the following Marshall Fund grants:

Centralized Intake and Case Management – $88,000

Provides a central access point for residents 60 and older through the Ask Marshall helpline. Trained staff assist with person-centered screening, link callers to Marshall-funded programs (such as transportation, handyman services, friendly visits, financial management, and library visits), and connect them to additional resources like long-term care, entitlement programs, and volunteer opportunities. Follow-up calls ensure needs are met and additional services are offered as needed.

Marketing – $16,225

Expands outreach efforts to raise awareness of Marshall Fund programs, especially in rural and underserved areas, and engages additional volunteers to help provide services.

Genesee Senior Foundation Programs

The Genesee Senior Foundation, a nonprofit that supports the Office for the Aging and older adults in the community, also received two Marshall Fund grants aimed at increasing socialization:

Recreation Mini Grants – $14,500

Provides funding for older adult groups to expand access to recreational, cultural, and social activities in Genesee County.

Social Transportation – $7,000

Offers affordable or free transportation for groups of four or more older adults to attend social, recreational, and cultural outings of their choice.

Together, these grants continue to strengthen the safety net of services available to Genesee County’s older residents, ensuring that they have opportunities not just to meet their daily needs, but also to thrive.
