Extreme cold can be life-threatening with short-term exposure. Residents are encouraged to limit time outdoors, plan ahead, and use the local resources listed below. Please check on neighbors, older adults, and anyone without reliable heat.

Residents are also encouraged to stay informed by downloading the Ready Genesee Emergency Preparedness App, which provides local alerts, weather updates, and emergency preparedness information. 


Local daytime warming centers

The following locations are available as daytime warming centers in Genesee County. Hours may change due to severe weather or holidays. Please call ahead when possible. Information current as of January 22, 2026.

Outside of business hours, individuals in need of assistance can contact the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office non-emergency line at 585-343-5000. Business hours are Monday–Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.


National Weather Service forecast

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Cold Watch for Genesee County. Dangerous wind chills are expected late Friday night through Sunday morning. The watch is currently in effect from 1:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7 through 10:00 a.m. Sunday, February 8. Wind chills may fall well below zero.

Cold weather safety tips

Protect yourself outdoors

  • Dress in layers and cover exposed skin.
  • Limit time outdoors and take warm breaks.
  • Let someone know where you are going.

Hypothermia and frostbite

  • Move to a warm place and remove wet clothing.
  • Warm slowly using dry clothes and blankets.
  • For frostbite, use warm (not hot) water.
  • Do not rub frostbitten areas or apply direct heat.
  • Seek medical attention immediately if symptoms appear.

Staying warm during a power outage

  • Close off unused rooms and block drafts.
  • Wear loose, layered clothing.
  • Eat and drink regularly to maintain body heat.

Travel and generator safety

  • Avoid travel during extreme cold if possible.
  • If stranded, run your vehicle 10 minutes per hour and keep the exhaust clear.
  • Never run generators or fuel-burning devices indoors or in garages.
