Genesee County Parks, Recreation & Forestry and the ACORNS invite the community to celebrate a special milestone for Ruby, the beloved turtle who has called the Genesee County Park & Forest Interpretive Nature Center home since 2011.

The Ruby the Turtle Housewarming Celebration will be held on Friday, June 26, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Genesee County Park & Forest Interpretive Nature Center.

Ruby has been cared for by a dedicated team of volunteers for more than a decade and has inspired thousands of students and park visitors to learn more about nature, wildlife, and the importance of being good stewards of the environment.

In 2025, the ACORNS held a fundraiser to support the creation of a brand-new indoor habitat for Ruby at the Interpretive Center. Thanks to the generosity of community members, local businesses, volunteers, and supporters, Ruby’s new home now includes more space, a larger tank where visitors can watch her swim, and an enhanced filtration system to help keep her habitat clean and healthy.

Throughout the year, Genesee County Parks staff and volunteers have worked hard to build Ruby’s new home and help her adjust to the updated space. The community is now invited to see the completed habitat during Ruby’s Housewarming Celebration.

The event will celebrate the many individuals and businesses who donated time, funding, supplies, and support to make this project possible.

Event Schedule

4:00 p.m. — Event begins

4:00 to 5:15 p.m. — Open house

Ruby’s new habitat is an exciting update for the Nature Center and will continue to support environmental education for students, families, and visitors for years to come.
