Animal Shelter Information

Only residents of Genesee County may surrender an animal at the Genesee County Animal Shelter. Please call ahead before bringing an animal to the shelter. Although we want to help as many animals as possible, there are times when space is not available.

Post for Paws

Post for Paws highlights animals available for adoption at the Genesee County Animal Shelter. Each Sunday, a featured cat and dog are shared via email. Recipients are encouraged to print and post the flyer in a public location to help increase community awareness and adoption opportunities.

Featured animals also appear in the Saturday PennySaver ad for Genesee Feeds and may be highlighted elsewhere in the publication.

To join the email list, send a message to info@vol4animals.org. Email addresses are used only for shelter-related information and will not appear on postings.

Lost or Found Dogs

If your dog is lost, call immediately at (585) 343-6410. The waiting period before a dog may be adopted is 5 to 7 days.

If you find a dog, contact the shelter. Only Genesee County residents may turn an animal into the shelter. The shelter does not pick up stray cats.

Adoption

Effective January 1, 2026, there is a $100 non-refundable adoption fee for all animals.

If the animal is not spayed or neutered, a $35 refundable deposit is required and will be returned upon proof of surgery.

An adoption application must be completed at the shelter by the person wishing to adopt. Once reviewed and approved, the potential adopter may visit and meet available animals.

Dog Adoptions

  • All dogs must be licensed before leaving the shelter.
  • Public offices that issue dog licenses are not open on weekends.
  • Dogs must leave the shelter on a leash. Please bring a leash.

Cat Adoptions

  • Cats must leave the shelter in a carrier. Please bring a carrier.
