Healthy Headwaters: Black Creek Restoration Project
Video: Healthy Headwaters: Empowering Youth to Restore Riparian Habitat in the Upper Black Creek Watershed
Genesee County Parks, Recreation & Forestry, in partnership with a diverse coalition of community organizations, will apply ecosystem-based management techniques to restore 140 linear feet of riparian habitat in the headwaters of the Upper Black Creek watershed at the Genesee County Park & Forest.
The Genesee County Park & Forest is home to the headwaters of Black Creek, the beginning of the creek system. Water flows from the park to the Genesee River and ultimately to Lake Ontario. Black Creek supports unique wildlife and plays an important role in the local ecosystem.
This project will improve water quality and engage students and volunteers of all ages in making a positive environmental impact.

Meadow Restoration Project
Genesee County Park features a unique meadow habitat behind the Interpretive Nature Center. This 10+ acre area supports a variety of wildflowers, pollinators, and birds.
Park staff, partners, and volunteers have installed nest boxes for Eastern Bluebirds and Purple Martins, bird feeding stations, and a honeybee hive. Future stewardship efforts include managing invasive species and planting additional native plants.
Forest Management
Genesee County Park & Forest is the oldest County Forest in New York State. Visitors can observe signs of long-term forest management, including diverse tree species, planted rows, and deer exclosures.
We will continue to maintain a healthy forest ecosystem that benefits both people and wildlife.
