The Great Depression

The Great Depression and Its Impact on Genesee County

The Genesee County History Department created a research collection documenting how the Great Depression affected local residents and communities.

The Genesee County Historians Association funded a 2009-2010 AmeriCorps member position to support the project. AmeriCorps member Ruth Koch worked with Genesee County History Department volunteers to create an index of local articles from the Batavia Daily Newspaper dating from October 2, 1929, through December 29, 1941.

The articles document the hardships, sacrifices, community support and local response to the Great Depression in Genesee County. The completed project consists of 17 indexed binders designed to improve public access to the collection.
