Frequently Requested Records and Information
Abstracts of Title
The abstract of title, or property search, is not filed in the County Clerk’s Office. Please contact the attorney who represented you when you purchased the property.
Adoptions
Adoption records are sealed and may only be opened upon court order.
Back Taxes on Real Estate
For information about back taxes on real estate, please contact the Genesee County Treasurer’s Office at (585) 344-2550 ext. 2210.
Birth, Death, and Marriage Records
Birth certificates, death certificates, and marriage certificates or licenses are available from the local town, village, or city clerk where the event occurred. See the list of Municipal Clerks or visit the Genealogy section for research purposes.
Note: New York State did not mandate the filing of birth, death, and marriage records until 1880. Earlier records may vary by municipality and source.
DBAs and Corporations

Divorces, Annulments, and Separations
Matrimonial records are sealed and accessible only to involved parties or their attorneys. Photo identification is required for access.
Fines and Surcharges
Payment of fines must be made directly to the court that issued the fine:
- City of Batavia: Batavia City Court
- Bergen Town: Bergen Town Justice Court
- County Court ordered fines: Genesee County Probation Department
Surcharges ordered by Genesee County Court are paid at the County Clerk’s Office.
Hunting and Fishing Licenses
Hunting and fishing licenses are available from town, village, or city clerks. Check the list of Municipal Clerks or local sporting goods stores.
