Campaign Finance

Local candidates must file electronically with the New York State Board of Elections.

As a result of legislation enacted in 2019 (A.1641/S.3903, signed into law on October 28, 2019), amending Election Law §§ 14-102 and 14-104 and removing the $1,000 filing threshold, all candidates and committees are required to file campaign financial disclosure statements with the New York State Board of Elections (NYSBOE).

The legislation also removed the requirement for local and county filers to submit filings to County Boards of Elections. County Boards of Elections are no longer responsible for registering candidates or committees or for accepting campaign finance disclosures. All filers must submit required documents directly to the NYSBOE.

This legislation went into effect on December 15, 2019.

Candidates or committees who qualify for an exemption under Election Law §§ 14-124 must file a CF-05 Claim of Exemption form with the New York State Board of Elections.

If you have questions, please contact the NYSBOE at (518) 474-8200.
